Another fascinating publication by Mark Klett and Radius Books. Starting with the text of 1870 edition of Raphael Pumpelly's "Across America and the Asia, Notes of a Five Years' Journey Around the World and of Residence in Arizona, Japan and China" in which the Arizona section of that original book is reproduced via photographs for the reader to read. Although the exact route Pumpelly took across the Sonoran Desert in 1861, Klett provides an approximation of the journey, much of which now lays in the Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range. Klett's photoraphs document the present day with large color photographs of natual wonders as well as the human impact on the desert in the form of abandoned missile casing from Air Force practice runs, clothing left behind by migrants moving through the desert, and abandoned structures. Through it all, the natural world prevails, rattle snakes and saguaro cactus remain as they did when Pumpelly first passed through the area. Signed by Klett on the title page.
